Pentti Matikaisesta tuli Calgaryn talviolympiakisoissa 1988 ensimmäinen valmentaja, joka luotsasi Leijonat mitaleille. Suomi voitti loppusarjan viimeisessä ottelussaan Neuvostoliiton 2-1 ja saavutti hopeaa. Matikainen luotsasi Leijonia myös Albertvillen 1992 olympiakisoissa, joissa Suomi jäi seitsemänneksi. Samana keväänä Prahassa kilpi kuitenkin kirkastui MM-hopealla
Matikainen sai Leijonien peräsimestä potkut 1993 heikosti sujuneiden Saksan MM-kisojen jälkeen (Suomi jäi seitsemänneksi). Sen jälkeen Matikainen on työskennellyt mm. HIFK:n toimitusjohtajana. Mukaan on mahtunut verkostomarkkinointia, kuten oheisesta YouTube-videosta käy ilmi.
