Talviolympiakisojen mitalitilastoja hallinnut Norja sai ensi kertaa talviolympiakisat järjestettäväkseen Oslossa 1952. Kisat olivatkin valtaisa yleisömenestys. Uutuutena kisoissa oli olympiatuli, joka paloi Holmenkollenilla koko kisojen ajan.
Mäkikilpailua Holmenkollenilla seurasi peräti 150 000 katsojaa ja norjalaiset kokivatkin kansallisen hurmoksen, kun Arnfinn Bergman johdatti Norjan mäkikotkat kaksoisvoittoon. Norjalaiset juhlivat myös yhdistetyssä sekä pikaluistelussa. Kisaisännät voittivat mitalitilaston seitsemällä kultamitalillaan.
Norjan Hjalmar Andersen saavutti pikaluistelussa kolme kultaa. Alppihiihdossa USA:n Andrea Mead Lawrence voitti sekä pujottelun että suurpujottelun.
Suomi saavutti kaikki kolme Oslon kultamitaliaan maastohiihdossa. Naisten 10 kilometrillä Suomi otti kolmoisvoiton. Kultaa voitti Lydia Wideman, hopeaa Mirja Hietamies ja pronssia Siiri “Äitee” Rantanen. Miesten 50 kilometrillä Veikko Hakulinen voitti kultaa ja Eero Kolehmainen täydensi kaksoisvoiton. Hiihtokultaa Suomi saavutti myös miesten 4×10 kilometrin viestissä. Yhdistetyssä Heikki Hasu otti hopeaa.
Jääkiekossa Suomen Leijonat olivat Oslossa 1952 ensi kertaa mukana olympiatasolla. Avausottelussaan Suomi hävisi Ruotsille 2-9 ja sen jälkeen tuli takkiin Sveitsiltä 0-12 ja Kanadalta 3-13. USA voitti Suomen 8-2, mutta isäntämaa Norjan Suomi onnistui voittamaan 5-2. Kyse oli myös Suomen ensimmäisestä voitosta olympiajääkiekossa. Tshekkoslovakia voitti Suomen 11-2 ja Puola 4-2. Länsi-Saksan Suomi onnistui voittamaan 5-1 ja sarjamuotoisessa turnauksessa Suomi oli lopulta seitsemäs.
Jääkiekon kultamitalin voitti Kanada, jota edusti amatöörijoukkue Edmonton Mercurys. Ainoan pistemenetyksensä Kanada koki 3-3 päätyneessä ottelussa USA:ta vastaan. Kanada-tasapelinsä myötä USA varmisti hopeamitalinsa. Ruotsi voitti uusintaottelussa Tshekkoslovakian ja saavutti pronssia. Tshekkoslovakia oli turnauksessa neljäs, Sveitsi viides ja Puola kuudes. Suomen taakse jäivät Länsi-Saksa ja kaikki ottelunsa hävinnyt Norja.
